Abstract

Published in 1914, A Estranha Morte do Professor Antena transports the reader to a peculiar situation: the death of a renowned professor. Faced with the event, his pupil seeks ways to understand what happened, because, through the police and the newspapers, no effective solution was reached. However, when finally analyzing the notes left by his master, the disciple – in fact – obtains even greater ambiguities. It is in the midst of doubt that fear will blossom throughout the story, such as, for example, the yellow coloring – bizarre and repugnant (Sá-Carneiro, 2007, n.p) – marking the transmutation of the master into something (un)known. In view of this, the present work proposes to unravel the presence of fear within the selected short story, supported by Júlio França (2022) together with Fred Botting (1996) - with considerations on the making of gothic. By scrutinizing these excerpts, we seek to uncover how both corroborate the formulation of the instability and ambiguity intrinsic to this literary text, the foundations for the themes developed: death (life), science (imagination), absolute truth (doubt), among others.
