Abstract

This paper aims at outlining some of the structural aspects present in Jorge Andrade’s (1922–1984) playwriting that are innovative in the development of the Brazilian modern dramatic literature of the 20th century. For that, I carry out a comparison with the innovative features of Anton Chekhov’s (1860 – 1904) playwriting, an author read by Jorge Andrade, in order to observe in which aspects Andrade’s stile is similar to Chekhov’s stile, and in which aspects the Brazilian writer, for having lived afterwards, could go beyond to create plays that are structurally innovating even for the dramatic literature of the second half of the 20th century.
