Abstract

This study aims at investigating the effects of theatricality in literature (LEPALUDIER, 2008) by focusing on processes of hybridization (PINHEIRO, 2002; BENTES, 2006) between the genres theatrical play and literary short story. Based on recent stories by the American writer and playwright Sam Shepard, this article analyzes how narrative techniques — dramatic mode (FRIEDMAN, 1975) and paratactic style (AUERBACH, 2004) — and generic components associated with stagecraft (soliloquy, didascaly) imbricate in the narrative structure of the short story in order to produce effects of theatricality.
