Abstract

In Victor Hugo’s first novel, Han d’Islande, the novelist follows the gothic line, one of the forms of the fantastic narrative which emanates from the romantic literature and prolongs the English pre-Romantic tendency, known as roman noir or gothic novel. Elements such as theme, setting and main character - which entitles the book - support this idea, as well as some of the epigraphs which open the chapters and converse with that tradition. Keywords: Romanticism. Narrative. Roman noir. Fantastic. Gothic. Intertextuality. Victor Hugo.
