Abstract

This article discusses the therapeutic community for the drugaddicted as a social institution. The treatment is based on three axes, ideally leading to recovery: a) theological axis - Importance of spiritualvalues; b) coercive axis - rules and by-laws; c) language - creation a newframe of reference, re-education. Such elements function as part of aprocess in search of conditions for autonomy, that is, restore the drugaddicted the control of their free will. Giving up drugs leads to twoconditions: partial (controlled) use or suspension (total abstinence). Thiswork adopted historical and descriptive methods, relating to Goffman'stheories about the concept of total institution and how it applies totherapeutic communities. Analysing treatments for drug addiction impliesin investigations on how concrete actions of such institutions intend to develop some form of reeducation. So, the therapeutic community for drug addicts is studied as a social-educational phenomenon. The interests and values involved in this phenomenon are also discussed.
