Abstract

This paper proposes a dialogue between the ancient rhetoric and the dialogic discourse analysis, based on the works of Mikhail Bakhtin and the Circle. It pretends to examine how rhetoric lessons echoes in Bakhtinian thoughts, seeking for convergences and divergences between both of them. First of all, it presents the dialogue with Aristotelian rhetoric; then, with Platonian critics to its use and functioning. Our goal is to grasp the relations and dialogic possibilities between these two theoretical contributions, arguing the productivity of the alliance of them to comprehend and produce discourse and argumentation. Considering both rhetoric and Bakhtinian thoughts agree in different points, but also disagree in many others, it is important to understand how it occurs, so the proposed theoretical alliance can be grounded on strong and productive epistemological bases.
