This article starts from the concept of discursive tradition, revisiting its emergence, to discuss its relevance, both for studies that seek to research not only the history of languages and texts, but also for those that cast an investigative eye on traces of permanence and vestiges of change in texts of more recent synchronies. To this end, it dialogues with founding texts of the concept, notably those gestated within German romanistics, thus exposing its theoretical design, and also points out the spread of such a concept, scrutinizing its scope among different researchers and its possibilities of analysis in studies on textual genres. The theoretical exercise emphasizes Eugenio Coseriu’s significant contribution to the establishment of the paradigm of discursive traditions and reveals its legitimacy both for the study of linguistic-textual phenomena and for the teaching of the Portuguese language. It is hoped that the works reviewed and the reflections raised can contribute to taking this current of studies beyond the spaces already achieved in order to instigate new research and establish new dialogues.
