The critics in the “last” Iseb to the national-development project of Hélio Jaguaribe

Abstract

This article presents the main criticisms made by the authors belonging to the “second phase” (1960 to 1964) of Iseb (Nelson Werneck Sodré, Sylvio Monteiro, and Wanderley Guilherme) about the national-development project developed by Hélio Jaguaribe during the “first phase” of the Institute (1955 to 1960). We also analyze primary documents to show similarities and/or differences between the theoretical conceptions used in both phases of Iseb. By doing so, we find that the opposition of these last Isebians to the Jaguaribe proposals was related to, among other aspects, their anti-populism, accepting foreign capital in the Brazilian economy, and anti-imperialism.
