Abstract

The book Hijos del Salitre is a masterpiece where the theme is Death, which is presented as the punishment for the poor, specifically for workers of the pampa. The Death is a phenomenon that is present in every place transited by the workers: the labor, the environment, food, rooms and in the air. Where the most affected are women and children. To limit the power of death, labor workers (pampinos)travel to the city to seek state aid, but paradoxically there are massacred, including their women and children. In spite of Death’s power, the author doesn’t praise it but highlights Life and the hope of a republic where the worker has a worthy work.
