Dichotomies on the intersemiotic translation from theater to audiovisual

Abstract

Roman Jakobson (1959) was responsible for coining the term intersemiotic translation, which consists in the transposition of a verbal sign system to a non-verbal one, a concept adopted in Adaptation Studies, mainly in the novel-film pair, however, the Jakobsonian premise is still applicable to other languages, such as theater, for example. Intersemiotic translation has been studied extensively in the field of Translation Studies and Comparative Literature. Many thinkers have focused on this current in their reflections and research in the most varied fields of knowledge, from adaptation theory to Interart/Intermedia Studies. With this, we intend to make critical considerations about the intersemiotic translation of theater to audiovisual, in the light of Marcus Mota (2017), Patrice Pavis (2015), Etienne Souriau (1983), Lubomír Doležel (1997), among other semioticians and comparatists who have focused on this topic.
