Abstract

José Saramago (1922-2010), the first Portuguese-language writer to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature (1998), includes in his fictional works a series of comments about language and its use in writing. The objective of this study will be to identify in the selected corpus the passages in which the author comments on language in general, on the origin of language, on the Portuguese language, on the value of words (their complexity, their wear and tear and the changes they undergo over time), and the use of word games (verbal ludism, word pulls word and creation of new words).
