The experience of the double consists in the ego perceiving that it is not only itself, but that, within it, there are other selves. The I experiences an inner estrangement. This experience was exemplarily intense in the life of Juan Ramón Jiménez and determined the direction of his poetic thought. The relationship that Juan Ramón maintained with his other selves was neither of recognition nor of dialogue. He neither recognized himself in them nor conversed with them. Rather, it was a violent relationship in which Juan Ramón only tried to silence the voice of those other selves, because he thought that their mere existence endangered the survival of his own personality.
