Abstract

This article sets out to contemplate The Masters and the Slaves as “potential literature” given that it partakes of a scientific as well as a literary discourse. It examines the extent to which it is possible to apply literary theory as a tool for reading the different narrative configurations arising from the constitutive split between the discourse of reality and that of fiction. This article attempts to reflect on Freyre’s works as a means of reading Brazil.
