Abstract

This paper intends to discuss, mainly from “The canon as a formation: Antonio Candido’s theory of Brazilian literature”, published in O livro agreste, by Abel Barros Baptista (2005), some issues of the Brazilian Modernism of 1922, 1930 and 1945. Apart from each generation’s peculiarities, we analyze to what extent tradition was absent from the modernist discourse during those three periods. In spite of trying to form a “genuine” Brazilian literature, free from “alien” literary features, our modernists, in different ways, crossed the country’s boundaries and we realize that the identity of a culture is not shaped by excluding the other, but by how we use the foreign tradition.

Keywords: Modernism. Nation. Rupture. Tradition.
