Abstract

This paper reflects on the interrelation science-technology-human body, by discussing some ethical arguments as they appear in a short-story by the North-American writer, Nathaniel Hawthorne. There is a first part in which the representations of the body are presented in relation to the introduction of the new technologies. After that, through the analysis of the short-story “The Birth-mark”, images related to scientific research and its ethical problems due to the manipulation of human beings are brought to light. And, finally, these problems are reviewed considering the discussions about the body in contemporary society.
