The king and satire against the aristocracy: considerations on the satirical poetry of Alfonso X, a king-poet of the thirteenth century

The aim of this article is to discuss the relations between Poetry and Power in the troubadour’s practice, examining the political and social tensions of the medieval Iberian society in the context of the reign of Alfonso X of Castile. The resources chosen for identification and analysis of social tensions, and its treatment by the royal power, are the satirical chants created by Alfonso X, king of Castile in the thirteenth century, who was also a great troubadour. The specific question examined is the relation between the King and the aristocracy.
