Abstract

The following text is intended to construct a typology of the traveler Oswald de Andrade in his first trip to Europe in 1912. We will verify the profile of someone understanding the perceived aesthetic and economic transformations in transit between Brazil and the Old World. We want to take advantage of a significant experience of young Oswald and what that entailed, later, in his poetry and novels, Serafim Ponte Grande and Memórias Sentimentais de João Miramar. What came out of the trip aboard the ship “Martha Washington”? Ultimately we will emphasize the importance of the transoceanic voyages as an important contribution to the dialogue between cultures in distant countries, such as Brazil, France and Germany – a dialogue between their literatures, through more attractive, comfortable and safer journeys. For literary and cultural studies, these journeys will serve as a point of discussion on Modernism as a real crossing and search for the new.
