Abstract

This paper presents a panorama of the French aestheticism at the end of the 19th century, a movement which relates to the main other artistic movements of that time, for instance, Romanticism, Symbolism and Decadentism. As Charles Baudelaire is the central figure of French aestheticism, this paper presents the aesthetic conceptions of artists who orbit Baudelaire, not only his precursors but also his followers, confronting their visions with the ones presented by the author of Les Fleurs du Mal. The present study approaches as well the theoretical and literary writings by Victor Hugo, Stendhal, Théophile Gautier, Edgar Allan Poe, J.-K. Huysmans, and Arthur Rimbaud.
