Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the irony in the female characters of the work Tomorrow’s Eve, by the French writer Villiers de l’Isle Adam (1838-1889) and how this resource contributes to the composition of the work. Villiers is considered one of the great influences of French Symbolism; therefore, many of his productions are permeated with a rich poetic prose, as is the case of the work in question, and they produce great changes in the literary circle of his time. By writing and by the use of a scathing irony, which is characterized as one of his greatest stylistic resources, Villiers denounces the banality and superficiality of the society to which he belonged. Irony then becomes the main weapon he uses to fight against the values of the society in which he was inserted.
