The aim of this article is to analyze the novel Thérèse Desqueyroux, by François Mauriac, whose fictional universe is marked by the feeling of abandonment of the protagonist Thérèse as well as by a consequent disconnection from her family, reflected in a social attitude lacking concern with the other and sometimes with moral values. The protagonist’s conflict is triggered by the inessential aspect of her existence and by the maladjustment to her family, who is focused on private property, social status, and religion. Examining Thérèse’s mismatch between her soul and her destiny, this paper will analyze, based on Georges Lukács’s The theory of the novel, to what extent the self-sufficient subjectivity of the modern heroine determines her position in society – considering that individual interests overlap the collective ones in the novel.
