Abstract

This article aims to analyze the biblical intertextual sources in the work Tomorrow’s Eve, by the French writer Villiers de L’Isle-Adam (1838-1889). The author is one of the great influences of French Symbolism and many of his productions are loaded with rich poetic prose. His works, notably endowed with intertextualities that contemplate a wide variety of literature and writers, have rich cultural contributions. In his texts, Villiers manifests his belief in the Ideal and values forgotten by the society to which he belonged, criticizing superficiality, the blind faith in science, and the growing mercantilism. Considering his incessant search for the Ideal, this paper seeks to illustrate how the biblical intertextuality allows a deeper insight into the representation of Villiers’ idealism.
