The song of songs and the Lily of the valley, by Balzac:
Ramifications
Keywords:
Balzac, Bible, Human Comedy, Allegory, RealismAbstract
This article analyzes the ramifications of the Song of Songs in the novel The Lily of the Valley, by Honoré de Balzac. We show that the French author lets himself be influenced by the biblical love poem and that, in his work, he plants allusions, quotes, ironies, and reinventions of the verses from the most erotic book in the Bible, the matrix of Western poetry. This research shows that, by harvesting his Lily in the Song of Songs, Balzac further reinforces the idea of making his Human Comedy a Mundane Bible.
