Abstract

Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893), an important nineteenth-century French writer, was also a journalist and chronicler. In his chronicles on art and literature, the author reflects on the artistic and literary universe of the time, especially with regard to novelists and the novel. In this article, we propose a translation of “L’évolution du roman au XIXe siècle”, a literary chronicle published in the Revue de l’exposition universelle of 1889, in 1889, in which Guy de Maupassant presents a trajectory of the French novel, indicating the main writers of the lineage of observers.
