Abstract

Le Grand Meaulnes (1914), the only novel published by Alain Fournier who died prematurely during the First World War, is considered one of the greatest achievements of 20th century French Literature. This work presents a world in which reality and unreality come together and evolves towards the chaotic encounter of life and death, composing the eternal antithesis between happiness and tragedy. This essay presents a Freudian analysis of the text, exploring the presence of the uncanny and of dreams in Fournier’s novel. Keywords: Alain Fournier. Le Grand Meaulnes. Freud. Dream.
