The word on stage in symbolist theatre

Abstract

The style of the symbolist aesthetics was very criticized in regard to the dramatic genre. For many critics, it was only a type of theatre to be read and its performance on the stage was considered to be impracticable, especially because of the suggesting nature emanated from the poetic elements in the text. Thus, we aim to discuss the aspects of the performance in the symbolist theatre in the play forms, according to theories based on the multiplicity and heterogeneity of signs that compose the dramatic genre and also, to bring out the most famous exponent of the symbolist theatre in French, the dramatic poet Maurice Maeterlinck.
