This paper analyzes the evolution of the concept of cruelty through the work of Antonin Artaud. The metaphysical vision of life dominated by the cosmic cruelty, at the time of the Theatre and its Double (1938), is reversed with the experience of madness. The theatre becomes a weapon of war against the alienating forces of the body and mind. The idea of a liberating cruelty perpetrated against the system of representation that dominates our society of the spectacle is the essential legacy made by Artaud to the dramatists and contemporary artists.
