The Presence of Salome’s myth in the french Symbolist/Decadentist Literature

Abstract

We briefl y trace some occurrences of Salome’s myth in the nineteenth century French Symbolist/Decadentist works. Firstly, we privilege an approach of Salome’s presence in the New Testament of the Bible and following, we retrace her depiction by French painter Gustave Moreau and writers J. K. Huysmans, Gustave Flaubert, Stéphane Mallarmé and Jules Laforgue. In spite of having their versions of Salome done almost in the same period, their visions and versions of the biblical myth are different. Keywords: Salome. French Symbolism. Myth. Prose. Poetry.
