Abstract

Starting with a brief account of Wolfgang Kayser’s and other scholars’ theories on the grotesque, this paper analyses Victor Hugo’s novel Notre Dame de Paris, stressing the relation between Quasimodo and the cathedral. I comment at the end on some similar narratives that were published either before or after Notre Dame by European and Brazilian authors. Keywords: Victor Hugo. Notre Dame de Paris. Grotesque. Romanticism.
