Abstract

The novel Mocidade morta (1900) by Gonzaga Duque portrays the activities of a group of bohemian artists from Rio de Janeiro in the late nineteenth century. The text presents characteristics that refer to principles developed by the aesthetic movements in vogue at the time and also suggests connections with L’OEuvre (1886) by Zola. This article presents considerations about the two works and also seeks to identify points of convergence and divergence between them.
