André Gide’s the counterfeiters

Abstract

Les Faux-monnayeurs, published in 1925, is the only novel written by André Gide. Many critics considered the book a failure, but it poses very interesting questions about the novel as a genre and literature in general. This paper analyses four aspects emphasized by the author: social values and their representation in texts, the literary work as a truth revealer, the writer, and the narrator. We want to show the importance of a book that questions, by an atypical construction, literature’s basis.
