Abstract

Anne-Marie Stretter of Marguerite Duras represents the figure of the femme fatale; she embodies the disturbing and fatal beauty, causing the destruction of every being. The heroine symbolizes la beauté méduséenne of the Romantics, because she is imbued with pain and death. She has seduced Michael Richardson, the former boyfriend of Lol V. Stein, and her mortal power – instead of destroying her lover – overwhelms or traumatizes Lola. The trauma translates the loss or the void caused by the passionately loved one. Anne-Marie Stretter, or the femme fatale, has finally double deadly power: on the one hand, it causes the crazy and uncontrollable urge in her lover; on the other hand, it causes the symbolic death of Lol V. Stein.
