Abstract

This paper aims to understand the role of the photographic illustrations in Nadja, by André Breton (1998, 2007), that is, to analyze how they complement the narrative according to the principles of Surrealism. The purpose of this analysis is to note especially the importance of the plastic arts in the narrative based on the Manifestos of Surrealism, by Breton (1985), and on other theorists who discuss the subject. The photographic reproductions – registered in portraits, places, objects, works of art, documents, drawings, and posters – establish strong reflections between the writing process and the presence of these images.
