Abstract

Romanticism, in Brazil and the countries where Spanish is spoken, is a response to a desire for renewal and rupture, revolving around the independence mouvements. This essay is a reminder of the cultural and artistic presence of France in our country since the begining of the 19th century, and is a new element that was brought from outside of the colonizing nucleus. It is within this process that a great deal of textual references indicate the presence of Victor Hugo among us. Keywords: Victor Hugo. Romanticism. Brazilian poetry.
