Abstract

The authors discuss the question of sustainability from a newspaper report about a wedding carried out at Avenida Paulista and conceived as a correct ecological act. They show how this happening is contained in a wider scale. They argue that the capitalistic rationality that is present in the logic of competition and wastefulness is the same one on the command of the sustainability idea produced by environmental movements. Supplied by a set of data relating to the action of legal and illegal groups, they show how the practice of sustainability opens up to new and profits ways of accumulate while contributes to worsen the irreversible injuries to environment. They say in conclusion that, besides the impossibility of the capitalistic model to stop the present destruction of life’s condition on earth, only the international gathering of emancipationist social movements will be able to generate actions to a radical drift’s changing.
