Abstract

The article seeks to update the debate over citizenship, based on the challenges recently imposed to the concept by the processes of globalization and deterritorialization of Nation-State. The debate over the concept of citizenship involves a series of ambiguities and coincidences in its definition, starting from the recognition of the existence of a nominal and substantial citizenship, then the examination of those who are included and excluded from the demos, and finally the fusion between citizenship and nationality, with its recurrent conflicts because of the exclusion of some individual’s exercise of citizenship, based on the belonging – or not – to a national community.
