João do Rio stood out in the history of chronicle genre in Brazil. In particularly in A alma encantadora das ruas, a collection of chronicles written between 1904 and 1907 during the period of modernization of the city of Rio de Janeiro, the narrator describes the popular and underprivileged class he sees on the streets of the Federal Capital of the First Republic. The aim of this text is to investigate how social minorities are represented in João do Rio's work, establishing the hypothesis that the narrators of this chronicler are related to the broader panel of Brazilian chronicle between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
