In this paper we analyze President Lula's speech, resorting to Greimas' semiotics and to modern rhetoric (Perelman and others), in order to verify the argumentative procedures he uses to make the public believe in himself (in his efforts, in his good intentions) and in his government. We found out two basic procedures: the usage of the first person (I or we) in order to give his discourse the "tone" of personal engagement, and the presence of analogies and metaphores by means of which he tries to make his speech more accessible to the common citizen. Keywords: Modern Rhetoric. Argumentative Procedures. Enunciator. Enunciatee.Downloads
