This paper analyses the play Na Festa de São Lourenço written by Jesuit priest José de Anchieta from a French semiotics perspective. Revenge is a lexicalized passion in the play, and it has different meanings for the European and for the Indian, to whom the play was addressed. The analysis reveals that revenge is constituted as a strategy to contain the bellicose relationship between Tupinambá’s tribes since revenge is the foundation of their cosmogony. However, this article shows that the reparation of lack occurs in a collective perspective of that society. Although the text lexicalizes the passion of revenge, in fact, we have the discursivization of justice in the play Na Festa de São Lourenço.
