This paper draws on the idea that Semiotics can provide linguists with concepts that help explain the discursivization of language categories – not to establish a catalog of their multiple uses, but to understand the “logic” of how they work in discourse. From this perspective, this paper shows how concepts such as shifting out and shifting in permit a global explanation of the discursivization of categories like person, space, and time.
