This essay focuses on the concepts of “reversed irony”, “humoresque irony” and “Socratic irony” in relationship with the book The posthumous memoirs of Bras Cubas, by Machado de Assis, emphasizing Soren Kierkegaard’s refl ections, as shown in his dissertation On the Concept of Irony with constant reference to Socrates.
