Abstract

This is a study on the first publications by Cecília Meireles. The goal is to show the strong influence of metaphysic subjectivism in works such as Nunca mais... e poema dos poemas (1923) and Baladas para el-rei (1925), becoming the most important trend in Meireles’ poetry from the publication of Viagem (1939). The article also explains how pantheism –the organization of metaphysic materials – answers to this profound relation between the ego and the cosmos (the latter misinterpreted as theos, as a mythical power and principle of Creation). Melancholy interacts in that universe, instigating an existential problem, depicting a love conflict and stealing the colors of the landscapes. Since a high level of spirituality is perceived, the tension between spiritualism and symbolism was not solved, as the critics say, through the extremities, but through a new and distinct spiritual configuration: monism and/or theism, akin to pantheism.
