Abstract

This study aims to analyze the characteristics that could define three characters from the graphic novel Watchman – first published on a twelve-episode series between 1986 and 1987 –, as heroes: Dr. Manhattan, Ozymandias and Rorschach (MOORE; GIBBONS, 1999). This choice is justified because, in our opinion, these characters are the most influent on the unfolding of the plot, and also because they represent, through their complex personalities, philosophical and moral conceptions that are dramatically opposed. By means of a study of the plurality of their intentions and actions, it will be possible to verify if it is really reasonable to fit these characters in just one traditional archetype of hero. As theoretical apparatus of this work, we use, among other significant bibliographies to the study of the heroic image, the ideia of timeless archetype from Carl Gustav Jung (2012) and the statements about moral and ethics of Nietzsche (2012).
