D. Pedro II, in France:
unwanted visitor or prohibited meeting?
Keywords:
Brito Broca, Georges Sand, Alphonse Karr, Literary chronicle, Literary historiography, D. Pedro IIAbstract
This article proposes a reading of a literary chronicle by Brito Broca in order to analyze how the journalist represented D. Pedro II, Georges Sand, and Alphonse Karr in his text. By disregarding, albeit partially, the French and Brazilian sociohistorical context in which the Emperor’s trip do Europe took place, Broca gives the impression that both Sand and Karr refused to meet with D. Pedro for frivolous reasons. This interpretation allows for a reflection which helps debunk the cliches used in the construction of these characters in literary historiography.
