Abstract

This paper aims to examine the construction of a poetics of exile in the writing of René Maran (1922; 1935). Based on the considerations of Edward Said (2003) in “Reflections on exile”, we propose to understand the figure of the exile in the representations of nationality as a constitutive process of an ambiguous literary personality. In addition to pointing to the representation of an absence, Maran’s poetry ends up showing the expression of a feeling of exile that is more strongly linked to time than to spatial distances. Therefore, we discuss the peculiar place that Maran occupies in literature (French and/or Guyanese), giving special attention to his poetry, regarded as “classic” and little studied (MOURALIS, 2013; LITTLE, 2005).
