Abstract

This article gives a brief survey of the presence of the French writer Victor Hugo (1802-1885) in Brazil at the end of the 19th century. Poems, prefaces, manifestos, or critical essays are read, in an exercise that takes poetic activity as the center of convergence of the propositions and analyses that are formulated. The survey was organized around a provisional and relative typification, whose main objective was to explain how the presence of Victor Hugo is materialized in the writing of some writers (poets). Some hypotheses are also formulated through which there is an intention to establish some meaning for the dialogue in question. Victor Hugo is thought of as a mechanism triggered by these poets. We also observe the logic that seems to govern its movements, the games in which it is put into action; how it is mobilized; in which contexts it is put on the stage; and against which opponents it is activated. Literary activity is thought of as an activity that places groups in conflict, in discussion, or in opposition. We intend to think, as a result, which Victor Hugo is produced by the reading of these Brazilian poets.
