Balzac and the Devil
Keywords:
Honoré de Balzac, Devil, Bible, The Human Comedy, The Physiology of MarriageAbstract
This article aims to investigate and highlight the fragments of The Human Comedy that indicate the relationship between Honoré de Balzac and the Devil. It should be noted that this infernal figure and all that he symbolizes have fertilized the imagination of writers for centuries. As an example, in Milton, the Evil One definitively assumes the condition of declining beauty and splendor overshadowed by tedium and death. In Baudelaire, in turn, Satan is the most perfect type of virile beauty. For Balzac, as will be analyzed here, the Devil assumes the role of advisor, partner, and accomplice in his literary creation.
