Abstract

After nearly two hundred years of the invention of photography as an analogical process of capturing and printing a visual image, it is not uncommon for us to be caught in an automatic naturalization movement of photographic text. This fact may have been partly boosted by the current technological facilities related to photography, notably by digital cameras and their increasingly available resources on so-called smartphones, which made the action of taking a photo something extremely common, present in innumerable everyday situations. This article aims to discuss aspects of this photographic image statute, that is, its equivalent status as a substitute for the semiotics of the natural world, establishing what French semiotics means by a veridiction contract (GREIMAS; COURTÉS, 2008). We will approach in this work some of the strategies in charge of the meaning effect of the truth in the photographic text, specifically those related to portraiture and self-portraiture, from its analogical version to the selfie culture, outlining a working hypothesis particularly related to how certain semiotic practices in the expression basis (FONTANILLE, 2005, 2015) linked to the propagation of this type of contemporary self-portrait, can contribute to the promotion of its true meaning effect.
