Abstract

This article explores the interconnection between three crucial approaches to addiction recovery: Narcotics Anonymous, Discourse Analysis, and Cognitive Behavioral Psychology, using the metaphor of the “monster” as a lens for exploring individual and collective narratives. Narcotics Anonymous provides a supportive community where individuals gather experiences, highlighting the importance of sharing personal stories of overcoming the overwhelming force of addiction. Cognitive Behavioral Psychology therapy plays an essential role in modifying dysfunctional thought patterns. The analysis of the word “monster” reveals the negative internalized beliefs and how these beliefs can be restructured throughout the recovery journey. Discourse analysis deepens our understanding of narratives by tracing the evolution of the word “monster” and its connotations over time. By interweaving these elements, this article highlights the need for integrated approaches to addiction recovery. The “monster” metaphor emerges as a multifaceted representation of the recovery journey, uniting language, cognition, and behavior in a narrative of transformation.
