This paper investigates how the Brazilian editions of De l’imperfection (2002, 2017) operate a semiotic genre shift. It also examines how it reconfigures the reading practice originally proposed by Algirdas Julien Greimas in the De l’imperfection (1987). The analysis is based on three levels of relevance: text-enunciation, object-support, and editorial practice. This follows Jacques Fontanille’s model (2008), dialoguing with the notions of genre (Fontanille, 1999) and paratexts (Genette, 2009). It is understood that the Brazilian editions, by inserting prefaces, notes, and a critical apparatus, transition from the status of a work of art (or even a poetic “essay”) to a scientific disciplinary essay. They guide the reader toward a competency-based reading. Thus, the editorial work updates the existing work in the semiotic and academic fields, contributing to the advancement of Brazilian research.
