Abstract

This text aims to study the phenomenon of interpretation as a resource to analyze movies and understand how a cinematographic work, despite being presented as a final piece to the public, has a semiotic field, which can stimulate a collaborative relationship with the audience, and is full of meanings that can only be defined from the relationship between work and public. Therefore, concepts from Umberto Eco’s interpretation theory are taken as reference and, in order to study its practical application, an analysis of a passage of director Martin Scorsese’s movie Hugo 3D is developed, aiming to indicate the narrative strategies which lead to the dialectics between what Eco called intentio lectoris and intentio operis. The analysis is performed with the collaboration of the shot-by-shot découpage technique, which enables to explain, in the selected passage, the scale of the shots, the types of angles, the camera movements and some aspects of the movie scene, in which the interpretation is delineated. It is hoped to contribute to studies about the relations between interpretation theories and film analysis.
Keywords: Interpretation. Film analysis. Textual strategy. Intentio lectoris. Intentio operis.
